This Privacy Policy describes how EDSDEV INC ("we", "our", or "us") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use LeanMenu - Smart Menu Scanner ("the App"). EDSDEV INC is an organisation registered in Canada, located at 11-300 Earl Grey Dr Suite 208, Kanata, K2T 1C1, Canada.
1. Information We Collect
We collect and process the following types of information:
- Camera Images: When you scan a menu, photos are processed in real-time via the Google Gemini Vision API to extract dish names, descriptions, and prices. These images are not stored on our servers after processing is complete.
- Scan History: Your last 20 scans (including menu item images) are stored in Firebase Firestore and Firebase Storage so you can review past scans within the App. When you perform a 21st scan, the oldest entry is automatically deleted.
- Anonymous User ID: A unique anonymous identifier is generated via Firebase Authentication. This ID does not contain any personal information and cannot be used to identify you personally. It is used for rate limiting and associating your preferences and scan history.
- Anonymous Usage Analytics: We collect anonymous usage data through Firebase Analytics, including app interactions, screen views, session duration, and feature usage.
- Crash Reports: We use Firebase Crashlytics to collect anonymous crash data, including device information, app state, and stack traces.
2. Health and Wellness Data
LeanMenu collects and processes health-related data to provide personalized nutritional guidance. This section discloses all health and wellness data the App accesses and how it is used.
Health data we collect:
- Dietary Preferences: Your selected dietary type (e.g., vegan, keto, vegetarian, omnivore).
- Health Goals: Your stated health objectives (e.g., weight loss, muscle gain, general wellness).
- Allergen Information: Allergens you identify (e.g., milk, nuts, shellfish, gluten) so the App can flag relevant menu items.
- Activity Level: Your self-reported activity level (e.g., sedentary, moderate, active).
Health data we generate:
- Nutritional Estimates: AI-generated estimates of calories, macronutrients, and other nutritional information for scanned menu items.
- Health Scores: A score from 0 to 100 assigned to each menu item based on your dietary preferences, health goals, and activity level.
- Meal Recommendations: Suggested meal combinations ranked by health score.
How we use health data:
- To personalize nutritional scores and recommendations based on your dietary needs and goals.
- To filter menu items according to your dietary preferences and allergens.
- To rank and suggest healthier meal options when you scan a menu.
How health data is stored:
- Your dietary preferences, health goals, allergens, and activity level are stored in Firebase Firestore, associated with your anonymous user ID.
- Nutritional estimates and health scores are generated in real-time and stored as part of your scan history (last 20 scans).
- Health data is not sold, shared with, or disclosed to any third parties for advertising, marketing, or any purpose unrelated to the App's core functionality.
Health data retention and deletion:
- Preferences are stored until you clear the App's data or uninstall the App.
- Scan history (including nutritional estimates) is automatically capped at 20 entries.
- You can delete all health data at any time by clearing the App's data through your device settings or by uninstalling the App.
Important disclaimer: All nutritional information, health scores, and meal recommendations are AI-generated estimates and should not be considered medical or nutritional advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional for dietary guidance, especially if you have food allergies, intolerances, or medical conditions.
3. How We Use Information
We use the collected information for the following purposes:
- Core Functionality: Processing menu images, generating nutritional estimates, and providing personalized health scores and meal recommendations.
- Personalization: Adjusting results based on your dietary preferences, health goals, allergens, and activity level.
- App Improvement: Anonymous analytics help us understand usage patterns and improve the App.
- Crash Diagnostics: Crash reports allow us to identify and fix technical issues.
4. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services to operate the App:
- Google Firebase: Provides backend infrastructure including Firestore (database), Firebase Authentication (anonymous sign-in), Firebase Storage (image storage), Analytics, Crashlytics, and Cloud Functions. See Firebase Privacy Policy.
- Google Gemini Vision API: Processes menu images to extract text and generate nutritional estimates. Images are sent to Google's servers for real-time processing but are not stored by the App. See Google Privacy Policy.
- Google AdMob: Displays advertisements to free-tier users. AdMob may collect device identifiers and usage data for ad personalization and measurement. Premium subscribers do not see ads. See Google Privacy Policy.
- Google Play Billing: Processes in-app subscription purchases. Purchase information is handled by Google. See Google Privacy Policy.
These third-party services may collect and process data as described in their respective privacy policies. We do not sell your personal or health data to any third party.
5. Data Retention
- User Preferences (including health data): Stored until you clear the App's data or uninstall the App.
- Scan History: Automatically capped at 20 entries. Older entries are automatically deleted.
- Analytics Data: Retained per Google Firebase Analytics retention policies (typically 14 months).
- Crash Reports: Retained per Google Firebase Crashlytics retention policies (typically 90 days).
6. Your Rights
You have the following rights regarding your data:
- Delete Your Data: You can delete all locally stored data (including health data and preferences) by clearing the App's cache and data through your device settings, or by uninstalling the App.
- No Account Required: LeanMenu does not require account creation. All data is tied to your device and an anonymous user ID.
- Opt-Out of Analytics: You can disable analytics tracking through your device settings (iOS: Settings > Privacy > Analytics & Improvements; Android: Settings > Google > Ads).
- Ad Personalization: You can opt out of personalized ads through your device settings.

7. Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your information. All data transmitted between the App and our servers uses industry-standard encryption (TLS/SSL). However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Children's Privacy
LeanMenu is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately at contact@edsdev.ca.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
